In 1991, the University of Tasmania received a bequest from the estate of the artist-lecturer, Rosamond McCulloch who had taught at the Tasmanian School of Art during the 1950s and 1960s. The $100 000 bequest was used to purchase a studio in the world-renowned studio complex, the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, which is situated on the right bank of the river Seine, a stone’s throw away from Notre Dame on the Ile de la Cité and within easy walking distance of all of the main Paris galleries including the Louvre. The Cité complex has approximately 300 studios - these are owned by universities and arts organisations spread worldwide - and the buildings also house common rooms and library, a large gallery, a concert hall, as well as printmaking and photographic facilities. A residency at the Cité carries with it free and unlimited access to virtually all art museums in France.

Rosamond McCulloch’s wish was that her bequest should be used to assist a graduate of the Tasmanian School of Art to travel overseas. In the spirit of the bequest, then, the University now has a permanent base in Paris. It was fortunate to be able to purchase a newly renovated studio, developed by the Cité administration, in an eighteenth century townhouse a block back from the main Cité complex. It is a spacious apartment with kitchen and bathroom facilities, a large work-space and a bedroom on the mezzanine floor. Its two large sets of french windows overlook a charming garden.

Since 1991, the McCulloch Studio Management Committee has, with considerable assistance from Arts Tasmania, Hobart Rotary and the Rees family, been able to send eight young artists to live and work in Paris for periods of four months each. The artists have each received a stipend of to help defray their living and materials costs as well as return airfares; the University and Arts Tasmania also assist with the payment of service fees that the Cité charges for maintaining the Studio.
