Art Theory

Art and Design Theory consists of a core studies program undertaken by all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts. In years 1 and 2 or 3, core studies consists of FST100 and FST200 and one of the electives offered at Level 2 or 3. (Note: FST200 and the elective may not be taken concurrently.) The program provides students with a number of core studies in art, craft, design and film theory. In the first year it focuses on the traditions of modernism (the origins of modern art) and explores some of the 'aberrations' that began to occur, mainly during the 20th century, which eventually brought about the development of a substantive critique of modernist values and the emergence of the large number of post-modernist strategies which inform contemporary art. Years 2 and 3 continue this investigation of modern art and cultural theory, with a number of electives being offered in the second semester of these years. Students attend the lectures given in the weekly Art Forum program.
